Red Wings rally, Weiss scores winner in OT

CAROLINA — The Detroit Red Wings showed a different side tonight. A side that I haven’t seen in recent Wings teams, they played a complete game and never gave up.

Jimmy Howard made 23 saves and stood on his head throughout the game to preserve the win. Justin Abdelkader, Henrik Zetterberg, and Stephen Weiss scored for the Wings who were down 2-0 and came back to win 3-2 in overtime.

Carolina opened up the scoring when a fluke pass from Jeff Skinner got by Wings defensemen Kyle Quincey and found Radek Dvorak who tipped it top-shelf. Carolina’s next goal came late in the second period when Nathan Gerbe had a fortunate bounce of the puck land on his stick and he buried it past Howard.

Detroit would not go away easy as they clawed back. 18 seconds into the third period Abdelkader received a pass from Henrik Zetterberg and buried a wrist shot home. With 17 seconds left in the game captain Zetterberg scored on a scramble in front of Carolina goalie Cam Ward. Zetterberg fired a back hand that was blocked and then had another chance on the forehand and put it top-shelf. The momentum had swung in favor of Detroit and they carried that to OT.

In OT the Wings completely dominated the Hurricanes and eventually their hard work paid off and complete the comeback victory. Stephen Weiss slammed home a rebound given up by Ward after Johan Franzen had a nice shot on goal. Weiss ended up with first goal as a Red Wing.

The Red Wings move out to 2-0 with a showdown with Atlantic divisional foe and original 6 member Boston Bruins tomorrow night in Boston.
