Memphis Grizzlies Lose 13th Season Opener


The Memphis Grizzlies losing streak on opening night extended to 13 (the longest in sports) in a 94-101 loss to the San Antonio Spurs last night in a Western Conference Finals rematch. The Grizzlies have not won a season opener since they moved to Memphis. It was the Grizzlies 9th straight regular season loss in San Antonio.

Memphis was up 20-18 at the end of the first quarter, and that was the last time they had the lead. The Grizzlies missed 13 shots in a row going nine minutes without a basket only scoring two field goals in the second quarter. The Spurs led 48-27 at the half. Memphis scored more points in the third quarter then they did in all of the first half. The Grizzlies closed the gap and were down 58-72 after three quarters. Tim Duncan left the game with a chest contusion from a elbow jab by Tony Allen. With seven minutes left in the game, Memphis was within 5 points of San Antonio – after being down by 21 at the half. The shots that weren’t falling in the first half were falling in the second half for the Grizzlies. But the Spurs are the heartbreakers of the NBA. They don’t make mistakes, and they make big shots. After a hard faught second half, the Memphis Grizzlies lost 94-101 to the San Antonio Spurs.

High scorer of the game was Grizzlies Tony Allen with 15 points overall, including going three for three in three-pointers. Mike Conley scored 14 points and had seven assists. Marc Gasol had 14 points and nine rebounds. Quincy Pondexter provided 13 points off the bench. Mike Miller contributed with 11 points. Spurs Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw each scored 14 points, while Tony Parker added 13 points and nine assists. San Antonio’s bench scored 53 points.
