Free agent defensive end Jared Allen had plenty of options during his free agency tour. He could’ve signed with: the reigning Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks, signed with the Dallas Cowboys, gotten the most money by signing with the Oakland Raiders, surprise everyone by signing with the New York Jets, but he eventually choose the Chicago Bears.

The reason why Allen signed his four-year $32 million ($15.5 million guaranteed) may surprise you. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, although the Raiders offered the most money, it was Allen’s belief in Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, that played a big part in his decision.

While the signing was definitely one of the biggest surprising moves this off-season, Rapoport details how it all went down, proving just how quickly things can move in the NFL.

Cutler has been one of the most criticized Bears since his arrival, and for the Bears and Allen especially to make a big splash and Cutler be the reason, proves that maybe some of that criticism was undeserved. Allen played against Cutler during their Vikings-Bears matchups since 2009, but have been known to be friends off the field.

Bears fans and Cutler especially are more than likely very pleased that their franchise quarterback has Allen on his team, and not chasing him down anymore. If Allen decided Chicago was his best fit in main reason due to Cutler, it sets a high bar but one that may not be that far from reality.
