Report: Clippers and Nets discussing sign-and-trade for Paul Pierce

Paul Pierce’s reunion with Doc Rivers could actually be happening. According to ESPN LA’s Ramona Shelburne, the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers have discussed a possible sign-and-trade that would send Pierce to Los Angeles, reuniting him with his former coach in Boston.

The Clippers could outright sign Pierce to a deal, but it would only come as their mid-level exception of $5.3 million, definitely under valued for Pierce. Shelburne breaks down exactly how a deal could be made, in this article on ESPNLosAngeles.com.

And while the Clippers could simply sign him as a free agent using their mid-level exception at $5.3 million, the Clippers are interested in sign-and-trade scenarios that would allow Brooklyn to get something in return for the 10-time All-Star and because the Clippers already have so many small forwards.

Because Brooklyn holds his Bird rights, a sign-and-trade would also allow Pierce — who made $15.3 million last season — to sign for more than the mid-level.

The Clippers would likely include some combination of Jared Dudley, Matt Barnes and last year’s first-round pick Reggie Bullock, according to sources. But it’s possible any trade could expand to more teams as discussions progress.

The lack of moves made by the Clippers at the start of free agency, are tied to the hope that they could get involved in the free agent hunt for either LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony. Outside of a possibility of acquiring Pierce, the Clippers have also reached out to free agents Trevor Ariza and Spencer Hawes.

If a deal is made, Pierce would be reunited with his former Boston Celtics coach, Doc Rivers, in which was a duo that led the Celtics to the 2008 NBA championship over the Los Angeles Lakers. With the trade of Jason Kidd to the Milwaukee Bucks, Pierce’s future opened up, as he was known as a Kidd supporter in their first year together.

On Wednesday the Nets signed Lionel Hollins to be their next head coach, but there’s no word on how that could have impacted Pierce’s free agency.

It’s no secret that Pierce would like to be paired with Rivers again, and it seems that a sign-and-trade is the best possible situation for both teams.
