Browns announce Brian Hoyer as their starter

The Cleveland Browns have announced their starting quarterback. Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports first reported that the Browns have decided that Brian Hoyer will be their regular season starter in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine said he made the decision on Hoyer over rookie Johnny Manziel so that the offense could work to get cohesion and chemistry with Hoyer.

The Browns also confirmed their news on their Twitter page.

Hoyer and Manziel both struggled in the first two games of the preseason, but Hoyer came into the preseason as the starter and Manziel didn’t do enough to beat him out. Instead of fighting to beat out Hoyer, Manziel caught himself being late for a team meeting and flipping the bird on Monday Night Football, both of which come with his poor production on the field.

Cleveland has made the decision to take the veteran hometown kid over Johnny Football, and now the message is sent to Manziel that he’ll have to earn the starting job, it won’t be handed to him.
