Ed Reed signs with New York Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.- Ed Reed has a new home, and Rex Ryan has a reunion.

Early Thursday free agent safety Ed Red signed a deal with the New York Jets. Reed was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday after saying the team got simply “outcoached” in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Reed initially signed a three-year $15 million deal with the Houston Texans, but had his debut delayed due to hip surgery.

Ironically enough, Reed made his Texans’ debut against his former team the Baltimore Ravens, which just so happens to be the former home of Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens from 2005-2008, but was also defensive line coach from 1999-2004. Reed was drafted by Baltimore out of Miami (FL), in 2000, meaning he and Ryan had been on the same side since his career began.

An even better twist comes next week, when the Jets will take flight to Baltimore, meaning a homecoming reunion for Reed and Ryan. The Jets prepare to take on the Buffalo Bills this week, and Reed’s already out with the team on the practice field. To make room for the free safety, the Jets released linebacker Ricky Sapp.

Clearly influenced by Ryan, the move to sign Reed shows the influence he has within the organization and the trust that first-year General Manager John Idzik has in his head coach.
