Shanahan Benches RGIII in Favor of Kirk Cousins

KC and RGIII

Today, it was announced that Robert Griffin III would be shut down for the remainder of the season. Head Coach Mike Shanahan made the decision to sit RGIII in favor of Cousins because he felt it was best for the franchise moving forward.

Many believe that Shanahan is on his way out and he is just pushing Owner Dan Snyder’s buttons until he has no choice but to fire him. While others, myself included, agree with the decision to sit Robert for the rest of the season.

The Redskins are 3-10 and their season is over, there’s no doubt about that.

By sitting Griffin and playing Cousins, at least two positives can be drawn from this situation. The first, is to ensure that RGIII heads into the offseason, free from injuries. The second reason, is to give Kirk Cousins a sample size to see what he can do at Quarterback as the starter.

Couins was a 4th round pick in the 2012 Draft, and many teams have already inquired about trading for him. If Cousins proves to be a great game-manager and succeeds with this lackluster Washington team, his value could go through the roof and they could trade him for a great return. Washington can then re-evaluate the situation after the remainder of this season plays out and go from there.
