Pistons considering signing Jason Collins
- Updated: August 10, 2013
DETROIT- The Detroit Pistons have expressed interest in signing free-agent center Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay athlete in North America’s four traditional major sports leagues.
The Pistons have been one of the league’s biggest movers this offseason. They have already made big free-agent signings in Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings. Collins could be a nice fit as the Piston’s final roster position and can help work with young big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.
With the recent signing of Greg Oden to the Miami Heat, Collins becomes one of the last free-agent big men available on the market. Collins, 34, last played with the Washington Wizards, averaged just 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in limited minutes. He has not averaged more than 15 minutes per game since 2007-08.
The aftermath of Collins announcing he was gay might not be the issue with him finding an NBA home. The biggest issue at this point is whether or not the 34-year-old who hasn’t played significant minutes in five years is worth taking up a roster spot.
