Mark Sanchez named starter, Smith still battling for spot

NEW YORK- The New York Jets quarterback battle doesn’t seem to have any signs of resolution quite yet, but it still seems to be Mark Sanchez’s position to lose.

Sanchez was named the starter for Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sanchez was named the starter thanks to having a strong week of practice added on top of Geno Smith having a sore ankle which Ryan said was the “main factor” in his decision to name Sanchez the starter.

Head coach Rex Ryan has kept his cards held tight in saying who will be the starter come the regular season. All signs are saying that Sanchez, who has been the starter and has taken the starts, is leading in the position battle.

The entire group of starters will play the first half against Jacksonville which means Sanchez will get the chance to impress over that time. Smith, if healthy, will play the second half of the game. That could be a big “if” because Smith has been stuck on a stationary bike because of his limited mobility.

Smith has made it no secret that he wants the starting position, but he will have a long road ahead of him if he wants to knock Sanchez out.

Maybe another butt-fumble would seal the deal.
