Cardinals GM Steve Keim calls Daryl Washington suspension “completely unacceptable”

It was reported earlier today that Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington was facing a year-long suspension. That news has since been confirmed by the team, and Washington is facing a year-long suspension due to his second violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. One man in particular, Cardinals General Manager, Steve Keim, is irate over the suspension. In a statement following the announcement, Keim called Washington’s suspension “completely unacceptable”.

“It’s completely unacceptable that Daryl has once again put us in this position. We all know what the consequences are and will deal with them. From a personal standpoint, our hope is that this suspension will give Daryl the opportunity to accept the necessary help and guidance to get his life back on track and we will certainly support him however we can.

“As it pertains to our team, our approach is the same as it’s always been: next man up. We talk a lot about how critical depth is to a team because situations always arise where you lose players, whether by injury or other circumstances such as this one. One player’s absence is another’s opportunity. That approach has served us well in the past and we will rely on it now.”

Washington also released a statement through his agent Jordan Woy, who says he’s looking to mature.

This is not a good look for Washington or the Cardinals team, as this is the second suspension for Washington, who was suspended four games last season due to his first league substance-abuse violation, and placed on one-year probation for assaulting his former girlfriend.

One person Washington wouldn’t want to make irate is his boss, Steve Keim, and the track record of events could mean there’s a very short leash on Washington moving forward. It’s a shame, as he is one of the most talented linebackers in the league, and a 2012 Pro Bowler.
