Bowling Green Gives Beatdown to #14 NIU For MAC Title

DETROIT, Mi- Matt Johnson delivered when his team was looking for an upset for the MAC championship. Facing undefeated 12-0 Northern Illinois he bared down and dominated at quarterback for the Bowling Green Falcons. The Falcons(10-3) won 47-27 and put up enough points to put all chance of another comeback for the NIU Huskies to rest. NIU was looking for its 3rd straight MAC title and the team had come back in the 2nd half of each of their championships. A comeback was not possible tonight with the Falcons just dominating on both sides of the ball. Jordan Lynch NIU quarterback was contained and his short-lived Heisman hopes seem to be over as are the Huskies BCS bowl chances.

Lynch managed 2 rushing touchdowns on 126 yards, but considering he has two games with over 300 yards rushing kudos to the Bowling Green defense. He also was picked off twice with just 1 touchdown pass. Juwan Brescacin made a jaw-dropping one handed catch though for that touchdown reception and he showed how good of a receiver he can be catching 6 passes. NIU runningbacks Cameron Stinglly and TommyLee Lewis ran 16 times for 109 yards and the Huskies run blocking all day was excellent. The problem was the team was always playing from behind and had to pass 38 times. The Huskies defense gave up 47 points and was just terrible forcing only 1 turnover. Jason Meehan came up with their only sack and the team made 2 of 4 field goals.

Matt Johnson was the star of the night with 5 touchdown passes and 393 yards passing, all of his touchdowns going to different receivers. Consistently the Falcons burned the Northern Illinois defense downfield. Ronnie Moore and Alex Bayer both went over 100 yards receiving and Moore caught balls of 61 and 36 yards. The team committed 8 penalties but controlled the ball and played ahead for the whole game putting the pressure or NIU. Travis Greene ran for their only rushing touchdown with 133 yards yards on the ground and another receiving touchdown. When you put up 47 points and force turnovers you can’t be beat, and Bowling Green did just that to come up with an upset. Look for both of these teams to be in bowl games.
