Uggla Needs Eye Surgery
- Updated: August 14, 2013
Dan Uggla, second baseman for the Atlanta Braves decided the time is now to have Lasik Eye Surgery and was placed on the 15 day DL. Uggla has struggled tremendously through the season hitting a robust .186 and leading the National League with 146 strikeouts.
Uggla had this to say about the decision to do the Lasik eye surgery “It was a mutual decision, obviously I don’t want to go on the DL whatsoever, but at the same time we’ve got to do what’s best for the team.” (Espn.com) Uggla hoped to postpone the surgery until after the season but the Atlanta Braves approached him and they decided to do the surgery as soon as possible in hopes of Uggla making his return to the lineup in 2 weeks.
Due to the success rate of the surgery Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said “we may see a guy who is all the sudden is a new player, so that’s encouraging.” (Espn.com) Despite the low batting average, which has taken a significant drop in the month of August due to the fact that Uggla has just 2 hits in 35 at-bats, Uggla ranks second on the team with 21 home runs, third with 53 RBI’s, and ranks fourth in the National league with 62 walks.
Braves fan should not worry about their second baseman because their All Star catcher Brian McCann had the same surgery in 2007 and an “enhancement” surgery in 2010. McCann said that Uggla has tried all options and that Lasik Surgery “is the best thing for him, I think it is going to work.” (Espn.com)
