No more Pink Penalty Flags in the NFL

Yellow penalty flags will be back next weekend. The pink penalty flags that were used Sunday as part of the NFL’s “A Crucial Catch” campaign in support of breast cancer awareness will not be used in Week 6. The pink penalty flags combined with the players’ pink towels and equipment caused too much confusion on the field.

Every October, the NFL’s signature color is pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. Everything on the field, on the players, on the sidelines, and on the referees is pink. Quarterback towels, cheerleaders’ pompoms, cleats, gloves, wristbands, helmet decals, sideline hats, chin cups, shoe laces, sideline towels, skull caps, coins, eye shield decals, kicking tees, and goal-post padding are all pink.

The pink penalty flags were first used last year in the Dolphins-Jets game after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell received a letter from an 11-year-old suggesting it. On Sunday the pink flags were extended to the entire league, but with all that pink on the field it was hard to see when a flag was down. As a result the yellow penalty flags will return for Week 6, starting with Thursday night’s Giants-Bears game. All the other pink equipment will remain through Week 7.
