Panthers Win Defensive Battle Over 49ers 10-9
- Updated: November 10, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO, Ca- Colin Kaepernick Niners quarterback was sacked 6 times and Cam Newton Carolina Panthers quarterback was sacked 4 times in a defensive duel. The 49ers scored 3 field goals straight to take a lead but DeAngelo Williams ran for a 27 yard score and Graham Gano kicked the game winner early in the 4th quarter to seal the game. The Panthers defensive is one of the top in the league and held the Niners to just 151 total yards. Kaepernick looked lost out there throwing for only a 50 percent completion percentage and an interception, the dynamic runner also only had 16 yards on the ground. Frank Gore had 82 yards on just 16 carries but the 49ers were 2-13 on 3rd down and could not stay out on the field long enough to score due to the Panthers defense.
Cam Newton had a rough game as well throwing a pick with only 17 yards rushing, but receiver Steve Smith often bailed him out with 6 catches. Williams ran for an average of 5.8 yards a carry and scored the only touchdown of the game. The Panthers offense was only slightly better than the 49ers, and cornerback Drayton Florence fumbled his interception and gave it right back to the 49ers. The 49ers were unable to capitalize all day and only made it to the red zone once and failed to score a touchdown. The Panthers defense was just better today than the 49ers and they consistently prevented them from getting successful drives going forcing the Niners to punt 7 times, and elite returner Ted Ginn Jr. returned 2 of them for a total of 42 yards to win the battle of field position. Both teams stand at 6-3 and continue to make the playoff push, and don’t be surprised to see these talented teams move on to the next level.
