DEVELOPING: Pacers, Andrew Bynum close to deal
- Updated: January 31, 2014
According to the Indy Star, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, and other media outlets, the Indiana Pacers and indifferent free agent center Andrew Bynum are in serious contract talks.
Bynum, 26, finally made his return to the court earlier this season with the Cavaliers after missing all of the 2012-13 season with knee issues. As a member of the Cavaliers, Bynum appeared in 24 games (19 starts) and averaged 8.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg, and 1.2 bpg in 20 mpg. The stint was short-lived, as Bynum and the coaching staff continued to butt heads until he was suspended indefinitely. The Cavs traded Bynum and a collection of draft picks to the Bulls for Luol Deng, and the Bulls proceeded to waived Bynum.
It remains to be seen, if the Pacers and Bynum actually complete a deal, whether the Pacers would utilize Bynum in a back-up role, or if he would be brought in to prevent the Miami Heat from signing him.
Bynum will never be the superstar most felt he had the potential to become, but Bynum can still provide an interior presence that most teams don’t have in general, much less likely on their bench.
